Nail - 7

Soon, the commander stopped complaining and resumed his job of tracking enemy units. And he did it very efficiently. It was him who deployed his team immediately after the first attack after all, who was now cautiously surrounding the underground sectors with potential enemy units. On the largest screen of the INFOCON was now the cross-sectional map of the underground sectors of the republic, which stretched out to nearly three kilometers under sea level, and covered nearly all of the republic’s rocky treacherous terrains on the surface level. Han sat in front of the computer and navigated through it smoothly. She was very familiar with it, as they casually called it “the sponge” in academia, though the one on the screen was more focused on underground canals and caverns. The size of the map still left Han in awe, after years of working on it with her colleagues. Even the huge screen that made Han’s neck ache could cover only a portion of it at once. The special forces, equipped w...

The old bunker of the Special Warfare Command was crowded as ever. Mosses and molds were flourishing on stone walls to the degree that if it were not during wartime then junior officers of the command headquarters would be running go and fro with buckets and sponges in their hands trying to rub them off so that the commander and other high-ranked officers would not be upset with it. Nobody seemed to care about them now. Even though almost six hours had passed since they had moved in, not everybody seemed to have settled, since the narrow corridor was full with officers wandering around, finding people, files, pens, and even passwords, as if they knew that counterintelligence officers were too busy right now to care small security breaches. Old ventilators and generators hummed loudly through walls and ceilings, eating up everyone’s voice, which was already in the level of hollering. Some recognized Han and saluted, but needless to say, she was bewildered by so many distractions so...

The soldiers ordered Han and Kim to get out, so they did. Han almost threw up as the thick smell of blood and gunpowder immediately covered her. Kim did not seem good either, but he was sane enough to speak out the password that was given to him before he left the command. As their innocence was proved, the soldiers turned their guns to other directions without a word, crouched and shivering. Han did not mind that they ignored her because she was busy dealing with her instinct which shouted that it is a bad idea to keep moving in that fancy but flimsy car which will shatter into pieces within seconds when attacked. She stopped the Corporal, who just get seated again. “Kim, I think we should get on that instead.” Han pointed at the armored card. Kim had to agree, so they shoved themselves into the crammed car, right next to the soldiers who were too terrified to lit the cavern below with their floodlight and find the attacker. Han asked them a few questions about the incident, and ...

When Han woke up, they were already at the outskirts of Saho. Shimmering lights from the city were slowly fading away. The vehicle was drifting through a broad bridge. Han was quite familiar with the bridge, but the height always made her shudder. Most people seemed to not care, but Han thought that that is simply because they are so busy talking or playing trivial pastimes that they do not pay attention to how enormous is this concrete structure. This bridge, among many bridges which formed the Continental highway, was not built to cross bodies of water; instead, it was built over large tectonic structures like valleys such that, by their sheer size and the roughness of the terrain, normal vehicles could not pass. They were probably driving over eastern Moru mountains, Han thought. She had some passion in her job, at least before she joined the military. She looked over the tall chainlink fence, which ensured Han a little bit of safety every time she had to drive through the brid...
